Tick off your “one-day” list with these blood-pumping activities, all available on the Sunshine Coast. And remember, you only live once.
Tick off your “one-day” list with these blood-pumping activities, all available on the Sunshine Coast. And remember, you only live once.
You can’t help but feel energised when you visit the Sunshine Coast. The locals don’t waste a minute of daylight with the beaches and walkways a hive of activity come dawn.
The coast is home to three of the biggest Tri events on any athlete’s calendar – the Caloundra Tri, Mooloolaba Tri and the world-famous Noosa Tri. But it doesn’t matter if you’re more ‘sunbake and splash’ than ‘swim, ride, run’; there’s never been a better time to soak up the great outdoors and try something new.
And if watching the aspiring surf life savers train on the beaches, and waiting in line behind a cycling group to order your morning coffee doesn’t get you motivated, the stunning natural scenery is sure to be the final deal breaker to get you lacing up your sneakers.
Swap the treadmill for hiking, rock climbing and abseiling. Set out from the end of Hastings Street to explore the picturesque Noosa National Park along a selection of five tracks that cater to all fitness levels. Keep a lookout for koalas and glossy black cockatoos as you walk past rocky shorelines and spiky pandanus and come out to wide beaches and spectacular lookouts.
If you’re fighting fit, climb the steep 800-metre trail up Mount Coolum’s eastern side to be rewarded with 360-degree views and vibrant native wildflowers. For the ultimate challenge, take the leap and abseil down Mt Ngunun in the Glasshouse Mountains with Pinnacle Sports.
Ditch boring laps in the pool for a rejuvenating ocean swim or give your arms a workout as you learn to tack and gybe on a learn-to-sail weekend with Sunshine Sailing, out of Mooloolaba.
Get on your bike and Tour de Sunshine Coast on a downhill mountain bike adventure with Bike On, weaving along rainforest tracks. Or go off road in a different way with a beach ride along Noosa North Shore, and learn about Aboriginal culture on their Eco Family Bike Tour.
If the call of the waves is too strong, join in a group beginner’s lesson or book in for a one-on-one session with Coolum Surf School. There’s great point and beach breaks all along the coast that provide high quality, well shaped waves – perfect for beginners.
Don’t need a lesson? Hire a board and test out Happy Valley, Ann Street (Dicky Beach) and Currimundi down the south end of the coast, and Kawana, Maroochydore, Sunshine and Coolum further north. Noosa National Park and Moffat Beach are perfect for longboard lovers.
Discover what lies beneath the waves at one of the coast’s quality dive sites. As well as the popular ex-HMAS Brisbane wreck site, Mujimba (Old Woman Island) provides great diving and snorkelling close to shore while Pinnacles reveals the amazing sight of three upright pinnacles rising from the ocean floor, complimented by exciting marine life.
Or if you’re after a real adrenaline hit, take a dive with the sharks at Underwater World! Sunreef Scuba Diving Services at Mooloolaba is your one-stop shop for dive adventures on the coast.
Bring you’re A-game with you for a weekend of fun and adventure on water and below, from the mountains to the sky, on two wheels or four. If you can pedal it, paddle it, walk it or swim it, you can do it on the Sunshine Coast.
